The work consists of maintenance dredging and beach nourishment for the Fire Island Inlet and Shores Westerly to Jones Inlet Beach Erosion Control and Navigation Project. The effort includes dredging the Fire Island Inlet Federal Navigation Channel and associated deposition basins and placing the dredged material as beach nourishment along the designated feeder beach at Gilgo Beach. Up to approximately 2,500,000 cubic yards of sand may be dredged and placed, subject to available funding, to maintain authorized channel dimensions and provide coastal storm risk management benefits. Dredging will be performed to a depth of up to 14 feet, plus an allowable 2 feet of over-depth, to obtain sufficient material for beach renourishment. The work supports safe and economical navigation by alleviating shoaling in the inlet while restoring sand to the littoral system to nourish downdrift beaches and protect shoreline infrastructure, including Ocean Parkway. The work is to be accomplished using a large pipeline dredge meeting U.S. Coast Guard criteria for an ocean-going vessel. The contractor must begin work within five calendar days of receipt of the notice to proceed and complete all basic work ready for use within 180 calendar days. A minimum placement production rate of 14,500 cubic yards per calendar day is required. Liquidated damages will be assessed for delays beyond the contract completion date. The estimated construction cost is between $25 million and $100 million, and the procurement is unrestricted.
