The project involves geotechnical drilling along 7.6 miles of Red Grade Road in Sheridan County, Wyoming, between Mileposts 3.3 and 10.9. The work includes sixteen shallow borings up to 5 feet deep (or until refusal) and one deep boring up to 30 feet deep (or until refusal), using hollow stem auger (HSA) drilling with a truck-mounted drill rig. The subsurface is expected to consist of silty, clayey sand with gravel, cobbles, and potentially boulders or bedrock. A two-person drill crew is anticipated. Shallow borings will penetrate the existing road structure to collect bulk subgrade samples in 5-gallon buckets (50-70 pounds each), spaced approximately every 0.50 mile or as marked. The deep boring will collect split barrel samples in 1-gallon ziplock bags and measure Standard Penetration Test (SPT) resistance at 5-foot intervals. Drill cuttings may be dispersed on-site. Borings less than 5 feet deep will be backfilled with excess cuttings; deeper borings will be backfilled with imported pea gravel or bentonite chips and compacted. All borings will be topped with at least 6 inches of compacted crushed aggregate road base. FHWA personnel will log and transport samples, and will provide the necessary buckets and bags.
