Construction Materials Lab conducted a total of 13 soil borings and prepared a geotechnical report for the proposed Football Stadium Rehab project at Ripley High School. The following geotechnical concerns and recommendations are summarized below. The summary is not intended to replace the full report, and the report should be read in its entirety to fully understand the investigation and recommendations. The site exhibits a thin, firm silty clay crust averaging 2-4 feet thick, followed by wetter softer silts and silty clays. No buried organics, previous building debris or expansive clay was encountered. Groundwater was present in all borings, and was as shallow as 1 foot below the ground surface along the north and east sides. Based on the soil characteristics the IBC seismic site classification is Site Class D. Following the recommendations detailed in Sections 4 and 5.1, traditional shallow footings and a slab on grade can be used for the proposed buildings with the understanding that many of the footings will likely require undercutting and replacement with a stone or flowable fill bridge lift. A maximum allowable bearing capacity of 1,500 psf for strips an isolated footings is recommended based on a safety factor of 3. Drilled piers can be used for the sports lighting, however the contractor should be aware of the high groundwater and caving silty soils. Section 5.2 details drilled pier design values. Helical piers could be a cost savings alternative. Areas of undercut or continued reprocessing will likely be needed for areas of construction traffic and demolition areas that disturb the thin upper crust. If a turf field surface is being considered, we would recommend light construction equipment for installation to minimize disturbance and subsequent Any new storm drains will likely encounter groundwater and soft soils. The contractor should allow for extra time and caving trench conditions, and we recommend open graded stone be used for all of the bedding and backfill. For all the concrete sidewalks and pavement around the stadium, we recommend 5 inches of concrete over 6 inches of compacted base stone or soil cement Based on current information, the proposed construction consists of: New home bleachers New Concessions / Ticketing buildings and Scoreboard south of track Possible replacement of SW Field House Possible new sports lighting Removal of the track New sidewalks Potential new field surface / drainage Estimates of Maximum loads for the structures include: South Bldgs.: 1.5-2.5 kip/ft wall load, 30-40 kips on columns Bleachers.: 40-60 kips per column Sports Lighting: 70-80-foot-tall poles (baseball and softball) 60-foot poles (tennis), estimated 3-5-kip shear, 150-250 kip-ft overturning moment, and 2-4-kip axial compressive depending on pole height and lighting configuration
