Project Description: This project includes work to upgrade and improve the City wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). The WWTP currently aerobically digests and thickens waste activated sludge (WAS) from the membrane bioreactor (MBR) to 2% via membrane thickening. The City intends to install a screw press, polymer system, and sludge pumps to dewater digested sludge. Due to limited sludge storage space, the City has little flexibility in additional wasting from the MBR process when digesters are full. The addition of dewatering equipment will provide plant staff with flexibility to waste additional sludge from the MBR process as the digester volume can be reduced by dewatering sludge to be stored within the existing covered drying bed and hauled away separately. As the process would be operated on an as-needed basis, no change to plant staffing levels is necessary. The WWTP has sludge drying beds onsite, which remain unused as the liquid sludge has too high of water content for the size of the drying beds. Dewatering equipment will be placed within the covered drying bed, at the southeast corner. Dewatered sludge will be discharged to a self-emptying hopper, which will be used to move dewatered sludge to storage piles within the existing covered drying bed.
