Site work, paving and new construction of a road / highway in Fort McPherson, Northwest Territories. Conceptual plans call for site work for a road / highway; and for the construction of a road / highway.
The Mackenzie Valley Highway is an all-season 321 km road that connects southern Canada to the Arctic Ocean. It replaces the seasonal ice road system available for short winer periods when the lake ice is thick enough to support heavy vehicles. The Project is expected to be built in 3 segments and anticipated to take 10 years to construct over approximately 20 years, subject to construction funding and regulatory approvals. Wrigley to the Dehcho–Sahtu border (102 km) Tulita south to the Dehcho–Sahtu border (134 km) Tulita north to the Prohibition Creek Access Road (45 km). TIMELINE: Project is pending funding. Subject to approval by the Mackenzie Valley Land and Water Board, geotechnical activities are planned to commence in February 2026. The Mackenzie Valley Land and Water Board issued a Type A Land Use Permit (LUP; MV2024X0038) to allow GNWT-INF to conduct geotechnical investigations over the next 5 years in the Dehcho and Sahtu Regions between Wrigley, Tulita, and Norman Wells. Tender and construction timelines are undetermined. Further update in fall 2026, upon approvals.
