A major infrastructure upgrade is underway as the existing State/Lake station will be replaced with a modern, fully accessible rail hub designed by a world-renowned architecture firm. The $444 million project marks a significant increase from its original 2017 estimate of $75 million, reflecting expanded scope and enhanced amenities. The centerpiece of the new station will be a striking glass and metal canopy spanning the entire double-width platform and station area. Key improvements include: -ADA-compliant access with four new elevators at each street corner and two escalators. -Flyover bridge for easy platform crossover. -Connection to the underground Red Line station with fewer columns and greater vertical clearance. -Wider platforms, improved lighting, updated signage, and maximized glass areas for enhanced security. -Energy-efficient LED lighting and improved sidewalk crossings with bump-outs. As of January 14, 2026, preparatory work began last fall, and the platform closed to passengers on January 5, 2026. During construction, trains will bypass the station while maintaining existing routes. Surrounding streets will remain narrowed to a single lane, with intermittent closures and detours as needed. The new station is expected to open in 2029, delivering a safer, more accessible, and welcoming experience for riders. Design team and contractor have been identified.
