Site work for a water / sewer project in Regina, Saskatchewan. Completed plans call for site work for a water / sewer project.
The City of Regina is providing advance notice of its intent to release a Negotiated Request for Proposals (NRFP) for construction of Phase 3 of the South Trunk utilizing trenchless construction techniques. Future proponents/contractors should be experienced in the installation of large diameter sewers by trenchless methods. Approved trenchless installation methods will be limited to the use of Pressurized Close Face Micro Tunnel Boring Machines (MTBM) with pipe jacking. Phase 2 of the South Trunk is nearing completion and consists of a twin 900mm siphon crossing of Wascana Creek, and approximately 700m of 2100mm reinforced concrete pipe installed by open cut construction to a greenspace location approximately 260m south of Dewdney Ave. Contract 3 is the next phase of the project and involves trenchless installation of approximately 1100m of 1980mm inner diameter sewer from the pipe stub, south through Government of Canada Lands, the Royal Regina Golf Course and Rambler Park. The contractors micro tunnelling system shall be a capable of providing full active face support and tunnel support throughout the excavation. The void created by the excavation overcut shall be filled with bentonite as excavation advances. No routine personnel are required within the machine or installed pipe sections. The jacking pipe shall serve as the casing and carrier pipe in a one-pass installation. The project includes construction of sealed shafts, manhole installation, traffic management, and restoration. The site location is shown on the next page. Notable features and constraints of the project include: Construction crosses Government of Canada Lands, a sensitive area with increased security requirements for access if needed. Construction crosses the Royal Regina Golf Course Lands, a sensitive area where construction must have minimal impacts on operations. Crossing of mainline CPKC Railway Construction requires working in the vicinity of high voltage overhead power and a large diameter buried watermain. Sewer depths vary from approximately 8 to 11 metres below grade. Curved drives. Please note actual pipe sizes, length and alignment are in final review and therefore subject to change. The subsurface stratigraphy along the Contract 3 alignment generally consists of topsoil or fill at surface underlain by Regina clay underlain by glacial clay till. Regina clay is often underlain by or interbedded with clayey silt layers which contain occasional highly plastic clay and clay till lenses. The Regina clay and/or silt soils are underlain by a glacially deposited clay till which extended to the termination depths of the majority of the test holes. The till is a heterogeneous mixture of clay, silt, sand and gravel with numerous interbedded clayey silt lenses and layers. The clay till in Regina is known to have cobbles and boulders. At some locations, the clay till contains layers of stratified drift which is comprised of interbedded layers of silty clay and/or clayey silt. Groundwater depth is variable but is expected to be encountered in the micro tunnel.
