The Kativik School Board (KSB) also known as Kativik Ilisarniliriniq was created in 1975 under the James Bay and Northern Quebec Agreement (JBNQA). Over the next three years, all schools in Nunavik were transferred to us from provincial and federal governments. In 1978, Kativik Ilisarniliriniq became the sole provider of educational services to the people of Nunavik. School board programs are now offered in all 14 communities of Nunavik. From kindergarten to grade 2, instruction is provided exclusively in Inuktitut, the mother tongue. English and French are taught as second languages from the third grade, and Inuktitut is taught as a subject until the end of secondary school. The school board currently operates 17 elementary and secondary schools. Five adult education centres, also under the authority of the school board, offer vocational training courses and programs in Inuktitut, French and English.
