The Kativik School Board (KSB), also known as Kativik Ilisarniliriniq, was created in 1975 under the James Bay and Northern Québec Agreement (JBNQA). Over the next three years, the administration of all schools in Nunavik, which had previously been provided by the provincial and federal governments, was transferred to us. In 1978, Kativik Ilisarniliriniq became the sole provider of educational services to the people of Nunavik. The Board of Education's programs are now offered in all 14 communities of Nunavik. From kindergarten to Grade 2, instruction is provided exclusively in Inuktitut, the mother tongue. English and French are taught as second languages starting in Grade 3, and Inuktitut is taught as a subject until the end of secondary school. The Board of Education currently operates 17 primary and secondary schools.
