Site work for a development in Braintree, Massachusetts. Completed plans call for site work for a conservation development.
The Town of Braintree is soliciting bids for the town-wide furnishing and planting of approximately 30 new trees of varying species and related work at various locations as determined and directed by the Department of Public Works - Engineering Division. Bids must be prepared as required or they will be considered non-responsive. Bid bonds, payment bonds, and compliance with Massachusetts Prevailing Wage Laws are required. The Town reserves the right to cancel all or part of the solicitation and to reject any or all bids. Question Deadline 04/03/2026 at 12:00 PM ET All questions regarding this bid should be directed to Ryan Matheson, Engineering Manager through email to: rmatheson@braintreema.gov. and answers to any questions will be provided to all bidders by end of business on April 6, 2026. The general scope of work shall consist of the furnishing and planting of approximately 30 new trees of varying species and related work at various locations throughout the Town of Braintree in accordance with these Specifications. In addition, the following related items shall be included in the scope of work: cutting and excavation of tree pits; the watering and maintaining of the trees; preparation of planting soil mix and fertilizer additions; installation of bark mulch; and fine grading of planted areas. A. The price for the planting of each tree shall include all labor, equipment and materials necessary to furnish and install the specific tree at the location chosen by the Town per the requirements of this section, as well as the maintenance of the tree for a period of one year following planting, as detailed in this section. It will be the Contractor's responsibility to ensure that the frequency and manner in which the trees are maintained and watered are sufficient to turn-over a thriving and healthy tree to the town for final acceptance after the one-year maintenance period. The town reserves the right to notify the Contractor of perceived maintenance issues, including lack of watering, as may be observed by town staff and/or residents. B. The Contractor shall conduct all construction activity between 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. No construction work shall be allowed on Saturdays, Sunday or Holidays without written authorization from the Owner. C. The Town recognizes the prudence of planting trees in the correct weather conditions and intends to engage the vendor to plant the majority of the trees under this contract during the spring or fall planting season. D. All trees must be nursery grown, freshly dug, balled and burlapped. Each tree must be tagged with the tree name (genus and species). E. Tree caliper shall be determined at six (6) inches above the ground as the tree stands in its natural position. Correct depth of tree must show root flare 1" to 2" above the existing grade and have no exposed surface roots. F. Tree shall be specimen quality with single-straight trunks and symmetrical well- branched crowns that are characteristic of the variety. Trees shall not fork below five (5) feet above-ground of planting. G. A list of planting locations will be provided to the successful bidder. Planting locations will include grass/loam borders on public and private property. Any tree plantings on private property have been previously approved by the homeowner. H. Eight ounces of a complete organic fertilizer should be inserted in hole before planting. Additionally, eight ounces of biochar must be deposited in the excavated area before planting. I. After planting the tree, the void shall be backfilled with a quality loam mixture approved by the town. Soil backfill mixture must be 94% screened loam and 6% compost mixture. J. All trees shall be inoculated with a mycorrhizal inoculant approved by the town. K. All soil amendments product labels must be sent to the town engineering department for approval. L. All trees shall be watered at the time of planting and backfilled with loam to keep the trees from tipping. All newly planted trees will be puddled at least twice within 24 hours including immediately following planting. At planting, a minimum of 10 gallons of water will be used to insure no air pockets in soil around root ball. The Contractor's water truck may be filled at town-owned hydrant locations which will be designated by town staff and pre-fitted with a meter device. Watering under the maintenance portion of this contract shall commence within 48 hours of installation of the first tree. M. Stakes shall be installed and must be 8' in length at 45-degree angles with chain locks for support. Any broken branches from shipping or transplanting must be properly removed before leaving the site. The planting site must be cleaned up of any dirt, debris or trash before leaving the site. All tags shall be removed from the tree at time of planting. N. Stock furnished shall be the minimum size caliper indicated. Fifty percent (50%) of the trees shall be the minimum size caliper indicated and fifty percent (50%) of the trees shall be the maximum size caliper indicated. Stock may be larger than specified. Winning bidder must work with nursery to ensure any seasonal dig hazards are avoided. O. Bark mulch shall be provided and shall be shredded pine bark aged at least six months and not longer than two years. The mulch shall be dark brown in color, free of chunks and pieces of wood thicker than one-quarter ( 1/4 ) inch. Mulch shall be free of stringy material over four inches in length, and free of chunks over three inches in width. It shall not contain an excess of fine particles. Red mulch will not be accepted. P. Bark mulch shall be placed over entire planting area of individual trees to a depth of three inches. Bark mulch shall be held back from the base of all tree trunks a minimum of three (3) inches. The mulch shall be higher at the edges of the planting to hold water and moisture. Plants must be mulched and staked at time of planting, mulch must be 3" thick and cover 36" x 72". 6.9% for women and 15.3% for minorities
