Enhancements will be designed along West Central Avenue to improve safety, accessibility, and neighborhood connections. During design, reconstruction of the sidewalk on the south side from North Lake Howard Drive to 7th Street SW will be considered, with a minimum six-foot width to meet ADA standards, improve driveway and street crossings, and enhance connections to nearby bus stops. Decorative lighting infrastructure along the corridor will also be evaluated to provide a safer, more inviting environment for walking and biking. At the intersection with North Lake Howard Drive, design will explore safety measures such as adjusting the markings, adding signage, and potentially converting the intersection to a three-way stop. At the US 17 crossing, the City will work with FDOT to consider improvements consistent with the US 17 Corridor Vision and Action Plan. Possible treatments may include enhanced crosswalks, curb ramps, safety islands, curb extensions, bike facilities, or actuated signals to create safer east-west connections between Lake Howard, surrounding neighborhoods, and downtown Winter Haven. These potential enhancements reflect Complete Streets principles, with the goal of improving safety, accessibility, and mobility choices while strengthening community connections. The project is included in the City's 2026-2030 Capital Improvement Program (CIP).
