By Ron Fonger | rfonger1@mlive.com CLAYTON TWP., MI -- Construction is expected to start next week on a roundabout at an intersection with a history of crashes on the edge of Clayton and Flint townships. The Genesee County Road Commission said the intersection will be closed to all traffic starting on Monday, April 13, and is expected to reopen at the end of June. An announcement from the Road Commission says drivers taking the detour should allow additional time to reach their destinations. The Elms and Beecher intersection was one of 14 identified as prime candidates for roundabouts in a 2021 Genesee County Planning Commission report. The county carried out early preliminary engineering and other work at those targeted locations to put communities in a better position to apply for funding. The $1.6 million Beecher-Elms project is expected to be funded primarily by the state and the county. Elms and Beecher is currently a four-way stop with stop signs and overhead flashing beacons. There were 15 crashes at the intersection during a five-year study period, according to the 2021 study. The roundabout work is one of 14 federal-aid road and bridge projects scheduled for construction and overseen by the county this year.
