The Elkwater townsite is the main visitor hub for Cypress Hills Provincial Park. Accessible from Highway 41 south of Medicine Hat and situated along the shores of Elkwater Lake, the Elkwater Townsite features a small community mixed with cabins, campgrounds, retail services, and recreation amenities. The townsite serves as the Park's recreational nucleus, offering access to hiking and biking trails, beaches, winter sports, and scenic viewpoints. The focal point within the townsite is the Day Use Area, which includes the Park Visitor Centre, the Marina, the Beachfront, and connections to trails and walkways along the Elkwater Lake shoreline. With recent investment in Cypress Hills Provincial Park (particularly within proximity to the Elkwater townsite), including pump station and marina refurbishment, a re-evaluation of the Elkwater Day Use Area has been identified as a means of coordinating development in the area.
