The work consists of the installation of native plants, according to a plant prescription, in natural areas that are being restored or expanded in size. The annual work program will be provided and scheduled in advance. All work must comply with the British Columbia Landscape and Nursery Association Standards and City of Surrey Parks Standard Construction Standards. The tasks involve planting native trees and shrubs in natural area parkland of various sizes, terrains, and site conditions, using plants typically in 1-to-5-gallon pots. Plants and general site plans will be provided, along with specific planting guidelines. The contractor must be skilled in planting layout and able to recognize plant micro-site requirements. Plants are generally picked up at the Surrey Operations Centre, with some sites receiving direct nursery delivery. Empty plant pots must be returned to the Operations Centre after planting. Planting sites include invasive plant removal areas, lawn conversion sites, stalled succession sites, and other areas requiring ecological enhancement. Some tree planting may occur in remote natural areas with limited access and varied terrain, and may involve planting seedlings over large areas. Estimated annual planting totals are: 5,000 seedlings, 20,000 shrubs, and 8,000 trees.
