Patrick Camp | The Cullman Times Cullman County Schools officials broke ground on the new state-of-the-art STEM Academy on Thursday, July 16. The CCBOE announced the development of the STEM Academy in August 2025 after being awarded an $18 million grant from the Alabama State Department of Education, the largest in the district’s history. On Thursday, Superintendent Shane Barnette gathered with other CCBOE employees and local officials to announce that construction would soon be underway. Today is a great day for the future of Cullman County’s workforce and the students of Cullman County and Cullman City,” Barnette said. When completed, the STEM Academy will replace the current Cullman Area Technology Academy which provides workforce development training to students within the Cullman County and Cullman City school districts. The new facility will be located on 79 acres of land in the Phelan community on U.S. 31. Barnette said the size of the property will leave room for future expansions to meet the future needs of local industries. “We know what we need to train our students for right now, but we’ve got some empty spaces in [the layout] and that’s going to evolve over the next two years so that we can train young people for jobs that we see coming in the future,” Barnette said. The facility is expected to be completed in time for students to begin attending at the start of the 2028-2029 school year. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Site package work for a new academy, including project supervision and site preparation activities as specified in the project manual. Related requirements and conditions that are indicated on the Contract Documents include, but are not limited to the following: 1. Existing site conditions and restrictions on use of the site including ingress and egress to the site. 2. Grading operations at the site. 3. The Contractor shall be responsible to secure the site during the execution of the work and provide proof of insurance including but not limited to General Liability, W/C, Auto, Equipment, etc.
