(Bill Freskos) Streator residents will soon have a new place to play pickleball after Streator City Council approved construction of two courts at Merriner Park during its meeting on Wednesday night. The council awarded a construction contract to Ruiz Construction Co. of Ottawa for the project. The original bid came in at $99,510, but Mayor Tara Bedei said the final plan will cost about $105,000 after the city increased the size of the courts while removing perimeter fencing. Talks about adding a new court have been ongoing since last year, as both the City Council and the Parks Board prioritized it as a way to expand recreation opportunities in Streator. Merriner Park, among other options considered, was chosen because of its location, available parking and nearby amenities. City staff had estimated that making the courts larger while keeping the fencing would have increased the cost to more than $131,000. By removing the fencing, the city was able to keep the project close to its original budget. The project will be paid for through the city’s Route 18 East Tax Increment Financing District, according to city documents. ------------------------------- The project consists of the construction of two pickleball courts and related fencing and site work.
