This is a major highway improvement project that will realign approximately two miles of Interstate 81 between mile markers 166 and 170 to eliminate the well-known "S-Curves" near Buchanan. Route 11 and Frontage Road F054 (Purgatory Mountain Road) will be realigned as part of the project, eliminating exit 167. Four bridges crossing Purgatory Mountain Creek will be replaced as part of the project: I-81 Northbound I-81 Southbound Frontage Road F054 (Purgatory Mountain Road) Route 11 (Lee Highway/Main Street) TIMEINE: As of November 3, 2026, the survey and design work is just getting underway, and the exact timeline is still being developed. Information in regard to a general contractor has not been disclosed. Right-of-way acquisition is anticipated to begin in 2028, with construction planned to begin in 2030 and a target completion date of 2025. * *Project information has been obtained through a public state transportation improvement plan (STIP). A STIP is a financial schedule for short- and long-range projects which is updated regularly. Information listed in the STIP often evolves based on funding availability. The project details, including timeline and value, are subject to change. The content management team will continue to pursue additional details as they become available.
