Tree Planting Site Preparation, Tree Planting, and Herbicide Application Project Dates : Aug 14th, 2026 - June 30th, 2027 Subrecipient shall hire a contractor to complete the following in Stands 1,2, and 3 from the accompanying Forest Project Plan for the Strathman/Heritage Trail Addition property in Dubuque County. Contractor shall prepare the area for tree planting by mowing the full area in August/September. Contractor shall apply glyphosate in rows at 10' apart on center to the mowed area once grasses have grown to around 4-6" in height following mowing. Chemicals used in performing these practices shall be applied according to authorized use, labeled direction, and other federal or state policies and requirements. Applicator shall hold an Iowa Commercial Pesticide Applicators License issued by the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship (IDALS) Pesticide Bureau and provide license # to the DNR Project Manager unless a non-restricted herbicide is being used, and has been approved by the DNR Project Manager. Contractor must plant Field 1 with 2500 seedlings using a spacing of 10' between rows and 6' between seedlings within rows. Contractor must plant Field 2 with 1400 seedlings using a spacing of 10' between rows and 6' between seedlings within rows. Contractor must plant Field 3 with 9700 seedlings using a spacing of 10' between rows and 6' between seedlings within rows. Seedlings must be 3-0 age class, if available. If unavailable, the next largest size class must be used. Follow the species list and quantity in the accompanying plan. Substitutions must be preapproved by the DNR District Forester. Contractor must plant the seedlings within one week of their arrival. If seedlings cannot be planted within one week of their arrival, the contractor must keep them in cold storage at 35-40 degrees Fahrenheit. All seedlings must be planted at the same depth as they were grown in the nursery or slightly below with no exposed roots. Seedlings must be properly tamped in to eliminate air pockets and should not pull out with a slight tug. Seedlings must be vertically planted and do not lean by an angle more than 20 degrees. For best success of the trees, it is recommended to install 400 five-foot-tall, vented tree tubes (ex. TreePro brand) and fiberglass stakes in Field 1, 200 tubes and stakes in Field 2, and 1000 tubes and stakes in Field 3. Stakes could include commercially available stakes (ex: Plantra brand) or fiberglass rebar. These should be installed on a mix of oak species. After all the seedlings are planted and before any vegetation emerges, Contractor must spray a 4-foot-wide band down each row and directly over top of seedlings with Pendulum and Princep herbicides. Contractor must apply 2 quarts per acre of Pendulum. Contractor must apply 3 quarts per acre of Princep. Chemicals used in performing these practices shall be applied according to authorized use, labeled direction, and other federal or state policies and requirements.
