The The Spence School Lower School Expansion project involves a major educational facility renovation and addition spanning 56 East 93rd Street and 1307-1309 Madison Avenue in the Expanded Carnegie Hill Historic District. The project includes enlargement of the existing rowhouse buildings, connection to the adjacent mansion building, installation of a rooftop play deck and ball cage, geothermal and mechanical upgrades, elevator and accessibility improvements, excavation and structural work, façade and storefront restoration, roof-level additions, classroom expansion, dining and STEM education spaces, and associated infrastructure improvements. The project was presented for an LPC public hearing on July 28, 2026 and is being designed by Murphy Burnham & Buttrick Architects (MBB Architects).
