Renovation of a medical facility in Edmonton, Alberta. Completed plans call for the renovation of a medical facility.

Alberta Health Services (AHS), in partnership with Alberta Health (HEALTH) and Alberta Infrastructure (INFRA), developed the Medical Device Reprocessing Upgrades Program, a plan that strives to identify and address deficiencies in provincial medical device reprocessing equipment and infrastructure. The key objectives of the Medical Device Reprocessing Upgrades Program are to: upgrade and renovate the physical spaces of medical device reprocessing centers; replace equipment at identified high priority sites; and comply with all relevant standards and best practices. The Royal Alexandra Hospital (RAH), located in Edmonton, Alberta, provides a range of healthcare services across multiple buildings on its existing campus. The existing RAH campus infrastructure includes the Active Treatment Centre/Main Building (ATC), Diagnostic Treatment Centre (DTC), Robbins Pavilion, Community Services Centre, Childrens Centre, Womens Centre, Orthopedic Services Centre, Emergency Centre, and Anderson Hall. A site review of the Royal Alexandra Hospital MDRD areas took place on May 11, 2021. This study identified deficiencies as compared to best practices for reprocessing including deficiencies to Canadian Standards Association (CSA), Infection Prevention & Control (IPC) as well as accreditation standards. This project will help to address the best practices and deficiencies as well as help to align the MDRD reprocessing capability with projected surgical activity growth. As part of the MDRD Upgrades Program, the proposed development of the Royal Alexandra Hospital Medical Device Reprocessing Department (MDRD) supports the Alberta Surgical Initiative (ASI) program to ensure that all Albertans receive their scheduled surgeries within clinically appropriate targets. The project will deliver the following major elements: new equipment and renovations in multiple locations within the Decontamination Zone, Sterilization and Assembly Zone, and Storage and Distribution Zone, along with expansion in these spaces to allow for additional storage capacity.
