While the design phase is moving forward, DSHS has not yet released the construction date. The project will significantly expand DSHS’ existing public laboratory campus, providing ample space to conduct critical services. These include: Disease surveillance. Prevention and intervention. Maternal and child health programs. Consumer protection programs. Disaster preparedness and response. Vital statistics. Laboratory testing. Regional and local health services. The additional space will enable DSHS to accommodate evolving technology and a growing population. The project will involve building a 220,000-square-foot laboratory building neighboring the existing facility. The new building will feature cutting-edge clinical and molecular diagnostic testing space. These areas will ensure the department can maintain current operational needs while accounting for future growth and flexibility. The majority of the new space – 200,000 square feet – will be dedicated to BSL 1 and 2 labs for newborn screening. The remaining 20,000 square feet will be used for a separate BSL 3 facility. As part of the design process, the chosen architect will design outdoor spaces, plantings, assorted site features and integrate advanced security systems and protocols.
