The project will infill existing openings within the reinforced concrete barrier wall. The Richland-Lexington Airport District (District) is seeking proposals from qualified Design-Build teams to design, engineer, fabricate, and install an architectural barrier enhancement system along the Departures Level roadway at the Columbia Metropolitan Airport main terminal . The project will infill the existing openings within the reinforced concrete barrier wall separating the elevated Departures roadway from the adjacent grade below. The existing barrier performs its structural function but contains regularly spaced openings that the Airport desires to enclose with an architectural screening system. The Airport seeks a solution that enhances public safety while creating a distinctive gateway feature reflecting the Airport's commitment to innovation, quality, and the passenger experience. The successful proposer will provide complete design , engineering, fabrication, lighting integration, permitting support (as required ), and installation of the proposed system. PROJECT OBJECTIVES The Airport's objectives include: Prevent objects from passing through existing wall openings. Preserve outward visibility through the barrier where practical. Create a visually distinctive architectural feature appropriate for a commercial airport. o Enhance the passenger experience along the Departures roadway. Incorporate integrated architectural lighting suitable for nighttime operation. Provide a durable, low-maintenance installation suitable for continuous public exposure. Minimize disruption to Airport operations during construction. Develop a system capable of future expansion to additional portions of the facility. DESIGN VISION The Airport is seeking a contemporary architectural solution rather than a conventional safety screen. The desired installation should function as both a protective barrier and a civic design element that reinforces the Airport's identity as the front door to the Midlands of South Carolina. The Airport encourages creative interpretation of architectural metal systems including, but not limited to: o laser-cut aluminum expanded metal woven architectural mesh perforated metal formed metal panels hybrid architectural screening systems Integrated lighting is strongly encouraged where it contributes to the overall architectural concept. The completed installation should present a clean appearance during daylight hours while becoming a recognizable visual feature after dark.
