A feasibility study for the Buckingham Elementary School (BES) project began in July 2022. The study documented existing building, site, and instructional deficiencies at BES and presented options to address them. In January 2023, the Worcester County Board of Education approved the construction of a replacement school on the existing site, followed by approval from the Worcester County Commissioners in March 2023. Educational Specifications were completed in May 2023, and Conceptual Planning was finalized in September 2023. After the State determined the BES replacement school project was ineligible for State funding, a BES Workgroup was formed in May 2024 to review alternatives. The Workgroup evaluated five options and recommended proceeding with construction of the BES replacement school, to be followed by a Berlin Intermediate School replacement project. This recommendation will be presented to the Board of Education on September 17, 2024, and to the County Commissioners in October 2024. In May 2025, the Worcester County Board of Education (WCBOE) and Worcester County Commissioners approved the project's Schematic Design. All information and costs included in this form are contingent upon approval by both the Board of Education and the Worcester County Commissioners, as well as the successful execution of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Commissioners and the State. The project is included in the County 2027-2031 Capital Improvement Program (CIP) Construction of a new 2 story school. The first floor is estimated at 69,387 square feet, and the second floor will likely be 21,364 square feet, for a total of 90,751 square feet between the two stories. TIMELINE: As of October 6, 2026, the Design Development and Construction Document reviews received state approval letters. An architect has been identified. Information in regard to a general contractor has not been disclosed.
