Demolition, site work, paving, environmental remediation, outdoor lighting, new construction, renovation and addition to a mixed-use development in Toronto, Ontario. Design plans call for the construction of a recreation facility; for the addition of a playground / park / athletic field; retail development; and 1,900-seat theater / auditorium.

Re-purposing of the Ontario Place site including the entirety of the East Island, the West Island, the mainland, the pod complex and the Cinesphere cinema. The scope of work may include commercially led solutions with a focus on entertainment and leisure. Public spaces will be enhanced and brought up to modern standards with new parks, promenades, trails and beaches. Key heritage and recreational features of the site will be retained and integrated into the redevelopment, including the Cinesphere, the pod complex, the marina, Trillium Park and the William G. Davis Trail. Therme spa planned for Ontario Place is to be built on a large swath of public land on the west island, currently a largely open and free public space that many Torontonians enjoy. The scope includes Upgrades to the existing flexible space on the East Island that build on the success of Trillium Park and recall the original Forum as a vibrant gathering and program space. Introduction of an upgraded and expanded West Island shoreline featuring a new public beach, extended waterfront trail and opportunities for swimming, fishing, and water recreation. Investments in biodiversity and habitat health, including the creation of new terrestrial and aquatic wildlife habitat. A more efficient and rationalized circulation and parking solution on the mainland that proposes an underground parking structure (subject to the outcome of the EA) that consolidates loading, tour bus drop-off, staff and visitor parking into a single structure with a high-quality public directly above it at grade. Improved access to the site for pedestrian, transit and vehicles, helping to better integrate the site into existing transit hubs and the planned Ontario Line subway terminus. The addition of new ticketed attractions to replace previous pay-to-enter activities. New attractions will create a year-round destination and draw substantial visitation to the site, reconfirming Ontario Place’s prominence as a destination of provincial importance, including: The redevelopment of the existing Budweiser Stage to create a year-round entertainment venue. A new state of the art water and wellness-based recreation and leisure attraction featuring a waterpark, pools, saunas, sports therapy, gardens, and thermal baths with indoor and outdoor spaces on the West Island and Mainland. Adaptive reuse of the heritage pods and Cinesphere as exhibition space for potential science-based programming, as well as an entrance pavilion on the Mainland providing direct access to the pods and Cinesphere. A potential future outdoor adventure recreation attraction. An upgraded and diversified marina experience, central to the Ontario Place site. TIMELINE: A call for developers was issued for this site, closing September 24, 2019. Following the 2019 call for development, three successful partners have been selected as part of the first phase of a multi-partnered approach to redeveloping the Ontario Place site: Therme Group, Écorécréo Group and Live Nation. On July 30, 2021, the Ontario Government announced the next step in a phased, multi-partner approach to the modernization of Ontario Place. Theme Group would build Therme Canada Ontario Place: an all-season, family-friendly health and wellness experience with something for all ages and interests, including pools and waterslides botanical spaces to relax; sports performance and recovery services. Live Nation is redeveloping the existing amphitheatre into a modern, year-round indoor-outdoor live music and performance venue that will attract world-class artists and events. Repair work on the Cinesphere, pods, and bridges is proceeding on-schedule as of late 2022. Site servicing, including sewage, water, electrical, and gas, is expected to begin spring 2023. As of late 2022 rezoning submissions were made to the city of Toronto and site remediation began. An official plan amendment and then the formal development applications are expected in 2023 as are site plan application, public consultations and council review. Further project schedules will be finalized pending funding allocation. *Joint-Venture developer Therme Group is available at 100 King St W, Toronto, ON Canada, M5X 1B8.
