New construction of a recreation facility in Edmonton, Alberta. Completed plans call for the construction of a 180,661-square-foot, two-story above grade recreation facility; and recreation facility.
Construction of a recreation centre which will include a childcare, a fitness centre, a pool as well as a 250-metre cycling track (Velodrome) and 750 seats for spectators. The recreation centre, located in the Woodcroft neighbourhood, will now include an indoor cycling track fit for international competitions and sporting events. The facility will serve as North America's first indoor year-round triathlon training centre. Because it will be a Category 2 facility, it will be able to host the Commonwealth Games and World Championships. The Coronation Park Sports and Recreation Centre will connect to the Peter Hemingway Fitness and Leisure Centre, providing a wide range of complementary programming. TIMELINE: Designs were only completed in 2021. Ground breaking recently took place following the City of Edmonton's budget approvals in late 2021. Construction is now underway; the General Contractor will not be releasing awarded trade information. Project is currently targeted for completion in 2026. *Contract value has not been released for publication. *The project is an architectural partnership between HCMA and Dub Architects, in association with FaulknerBrowns Architects. *The total project has been estimated at 153 million; 46 million specifically for the Velodrome. The improvements to the Coronation Park Sports and Recreation Centre were funded in part by a Government of Alberta Community Facility Enhancement Program grant of $850,000 provided by Alberta Culture and Status of Women. Argyll Velodrome Association and World Triathlon Edmonton provided additional funding.
