The Project will consist of a four story building, which has a size of approximately 128,580 GSF. The facility will house spaces for Chemistry, Biology and Physics departments. The facility will accommodate office functions, wet labs, dry labs and research labs, prep space, flexible instructional spaces, planetarium, a ground level greenhouse, multi-disciplinary conference rooms, computer lab space, storage and security areas. Upon completion, science disciplines will be in conjoined spaces designed to promote Commonwealth & University initiatives by creating flexible, interdisciplinary, collaborative and sustainable spaces that have integrated technology for instruction & research use. The Project will comply with NSU standards established in the Master Plan for brick, mortar, exterior appearance, wayfinding and landscaping. The New Science building is a four-level building that houses biology, chemistry, and physics. It includes both teaching and research laboratories, as well as classrooms, offices, a planetarium and a greenhouse. It is the first building constructed in the development of the future science quad. The building will provide support for the use of innovative science and research critical to current standards of undergraduate and graduate education. In addition, the new venue will provide support to create a learning environment conducive to the delivery of the science programs ensuring students meet state competency standards in critical thinking, scientific and quantitative reasoning. The project will replace the existing Roy A. Woods Laboratory Building, which is past its useful lifecycle and is missing pedagogical and programmatic spaces. The new building is located on an existing empty lot south of the major campus entry on Joseph street and west o Lyman Beecher Brooks Library. Key site drivers include the need to address the public entrance to the north at Gate 3, to address the student focused entrance to the south on Greek Row, allow for expansion of the future science quad, respect the massing of the Lyman Beecher Brooks Library, and create a beautiful, engaging, and educational outdoor classroom environment along a daylighted culvert for the Ohio Creek watershed.
