Site work and new construction of a mixed-use development in Toronto, Ontario. Working plans call for the construction of a educational facility.
Redevelopment of the McGlauclin Planetarium site. The proposed 9-storey academic building will house a number of programs under one roof, including History, the School of Cities, Near and Middle Eastern Civilizations, the Institute of Islamic Studies, the Archaeology Centre, and an arm of the Anne Tanenbaum Centre for Jewish Studies. The development would also include a music recital hall and a 400-seat events space, both with views looking south to the financial district skyline. The proposal also includes the demolition of connections to the 1964-built Edward Johnson Building (EJB) to the west. Commemoration and interpretation within the new building lobby and cafe areas, which would occupy the approximate footprint of the planetarium. The ground floor comprises a 462 square meters of cafe and a multi-storey atrium will lead up to the recital hall. The music recital hall will feature a large window to serve as a backdrop to the stage while offering south-facing views of the Toronto skyline to the audience. The project would include below-grade mechanical and servicing functions that would otherwise be located on the roof. The CCC would require the demolition of later additions to the Falconer Building located at the northwest corner and a vestibule at the southwestern corner. TIMELINE: Further to application for rezoning and site plan, the city has received additional materials in response to comments from Heritage Preservation Services. The project was forwarded to the City of Toronto Design Review Panel and approved fall, 2021. Working drawings are underway. Tender for general contractor is expected spring 2024 pending capital funding approvals. Construction schedules will be finalized summer 2024.
