The project will include an overpass of SE Oralabor Road. The extension of the trail is proposed in two phases. The trail is currently being extended from its current terminus at Ordnance Road southeast to Magazine Road. Phase I includes a tunnel under Highway 69 and is on schedule to be completed in 2020, with surface restoration completed in spring 2021. Phase 2 will consist of the trail's extension from SE Magazine Road to a direct connection with the Gay Lea Wilson Trail located on the south side of SE Oralabor Road/Highway 160. The project will include a grade separated crossing (specifically an overpass) to navigate trail users over the high traffic volumes experienced on SE Oralabor Road/Highway 160. Currently, $1,000,000 has been secured in external funding for Phase 2 through the Des Moines Area MPO Transportation Alternatives Program and State Recreational Trails Project Funding. It is assumed that the project will receive an additional $200,000 in U-STEP funding from the Iowa DOT. The project is included in the city's 2021-2025 Capital Improvement Program (CIP). As of March 22, 2021, the project is currently being designed and is scheduled for bid letting on June 15, 2021. As of May 5, 2023, no new information available at this time
