Site work for a mixed-use development in Toronto, Ontario. Completed plans call for site work for a educational facility.
The indigenous landscape at Taddle Creek seeks to be an innovate and contentextually, historically, and culturally sensitive space dedicated to Indigenous experience that will exemplify - in broad terms - indigenous cultural values of reverence and connection to the land and the relations that share it. The design will be of a high caliber that reflects the importance of this project to stakeholders, the University's aspirations and and broader Indigenous communities. The project will be located south of Hart House, a very prominent site that is the eastern gateway to the campus. The site area is an estimated 4,500 square meters. Existing trees and topography will influence the design and programming of the site and the intent is to utilize the existing topography to the greatest extent possible. While the landscape of the site has changed dramatically over the course of the last few centuries and more, the significance of natural features still resonates and are not forgotten. Taddle Creek once passed through the site on a meandering route to its outlet in Lake Ontario. It has since been buried in a series of culverts and tunnels. Despite this, the creek remains an integral part of the landscape of this site and holds spatial cultural importance to Indigenous peoples. Possible features could include integration of outdoor teaching and event space; indigenous gardens and plantings; story-telling through language/art/design. Additional features and requirements include site furnishings; relocate existing cannons, pubic art and flag pole; key parts of the landscape should be accessible to those who use mobility aids; audio system installation; interpretive and donor signage; design and specify irrigation system; pedestrian level lighting and signage. The project will be a contextually and culturally sensitive space dedicated to Indigenous experience that will exemplify, in broad terms, Indigenous cultural values of reverence and connection to the land. TIMELINE: The contractor was secured through a public tender issued late 2021. Construction began late summer, 2022 and is expected to take 14 months to complete. All sub trade pricing will be secured through an invited list.
