Site work, paving and renovation of a civil project in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. Design plans call for site work for a road / highway; for paving for a road / highway; for the renovation of a bridge / tunnel; bridge / tunnel; and bridge / tunnel.

The purpose of this project is to address structural deficiencies at the existing eastbound MacKay Creek bridge, to increase capacity, and reduce congestion along US 278 from Moss Creek Drive to Spanish Wells Road. The 2,230 ft Mackay Creek east-bound lane is structurally deficient and will be replaced. The remaining bridges (2,230 ft Mackay Creek west-bound lane and 2,823 ft Skull Creek bridges) will be replaced as well. Two causeways within the project limits may need to be widened and may become part of the structures scope of work. The team is tasked with studying the existing bridges to determine the viability of widening and/or retrofitting the existing structures to perform adequately for anticipated seismic levels for the area. The project will include: - A single, new bridge with full shoulders on both sides to improve emergency response and be future ready. - A ramp and local road to improve access to Pinckney Island and the C.C. Haigh Jr. Boat Landing, addressing long-standing community concerns. - The ‘Hog Island Connector,’ a local access road and bridge maintaining access to Hog Island and Mariner’s Cove As of November 21, 2025, the full US 278 Corridor Improvements Project is still a priority, but it’s currently on hold because of a funding gap. The US 278 Eastbound Bridge Replacement is moving forward now as a separate project—and it is being designed to fit seamlessly into future corridor upgrades should funding become available. Design team has been identified. Construction expected in early 2028. Completion anticipated by December 2030.
