George Elementary School was struck by an EF-3 tornado on March 30, 2022, resulting in damage to the school's roof, exterior, playground, cafeteria and entrance awning. The school's exterior gym was completely destroyed. A school remodel was planned prior to the tornado and will include planned development, as well as tornado recovery work. The projected project will impact areas that include the school's gym, library, kitchen, main office and music classroom. The remodel will cost about $11.2 million and will be paid for by insurance proceeds, district funds and state partnership funding.
