Site work, paving and addition to a transportation facility in West Yellowstone, Montana. Completed plans call for the addition of a 38,000-square-foot transportation facility.

*As of August 2022, an architect and construction manager have been awarded. The new building is scheduled to open in spring 2025. Architecture & Engineering and MDT are seeking an architect lead team of consults for an integrated design project to evolve the West Yellowstone Airport (WYS). The project is funded with FAA grants and matching state funds appropriated by the 65th legislature. Question Submission Close Date: 9/18/2020 2:00 PM MDT WYS was constructed in 1964 through the collaborative efforts between the State of Montana, the Federal Aviation Agency, the Department of Agriculture, and the Department of Interior. The airport operates seasonally to provide vital alternative transportation access to an otherwise isolated community. The airport also hosts other general aviation activities as well as a USFS Fire Center Base. WYS airport is a destination airport and the design should celebrate the unique geology, climate, and habitats of the park and the ranges and valleys of southwest Montana. . WYS is operated in the summer season but is evaluating shifting to a year-round operation. The project needs to accommodate the unique requirements of both seasonal and year-round operations. Systems need to be scaled and designed to allow some areas to remain in operation year-round and other portions limited winter operations. The terminal may include a food service that will service both secure and non-secure passengers and strive to optimize views of air traffic and the surrounding landscapes The project will be third-party sustainably certified. Designs will optimize energy performance including natural ventilation, and renewable resources with a goal to achieve or at least approach net-zero if feasible. . West Yellowstone has a limited construction season and the project execution will, for the most part, occur when the airport is in full operation. The existing terminal will remain in operation until the new one is complete. Structural systems such as mass timber that will allow quick assembly will fit the short construction season and not impede the existing terminal operation. Qualification submissions are due through eMACS to the Architecture & Engineering Division on or before September 18, 2020. Interviews are anticipated to be conducted mid/late October 2020 with an appointment in November 2020.
