Fire Station #71 was originally designed as a joint Police and Fire facility in the 1970's. The Fire Department side of the building was originally designed to house volunteer staff and limited personnel. The last major renovation occurred in 1987.Today, it houses a dozen operational personnel (including Johnson County Med-Act) in addition to five administrative personnel, and two fire prevention officers. The Fire Department has outgrown the facility's spatial and functional needs. Additionally, the facility has significant aging mechanical, electrical, and plumbing challenges and does not adequately address privacy concerns for a coed living quarters.Fire Station #73 was built in 1989 to house two full-time personnel. The facility also has bays for Public Works vehicle and equipment storage. Today, the station houses four fighters, two Johnson County Med-Act personnel, and multiple fire apparatus. Additionally, the facility does not adequately address privacy concerns for coed living quarters. As of September 14, 2023, this project is included in the City of Shawnee's FY 2022-2031 CIP. The Architects and the construction manager have been identified. Construction is anticipated to begin in fourth quarter 2023 at the earliest. *Project information has been obtained through a public capital improvement plan (CIP).
