The scope of work consists of excavation of contaminated soil containing radium-226, total uranium, and thorium-230 from the Former Carnotite Reduction Company site located at 434 East 26th Street in Chicago. The soil contamination is present beneath the East 26th Street rightof-way and on the northern portion of the former Michael Reese Hospital property, currently owned by the City of Chicago. Previous investigations have identified soil contamination to 14 feet below ground surface, and a maximum excavation depth of up to 15 feet below grade is expected The scope of work also includes but is not limited to: 1. Utility coordination, abandonment and removal; 2. Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) Office of Underground Coordination (OUC) coordination for subsurface work in the right of way, including participation in the deep excavation and existing facilities protection review process being coordinated by AIS and obtaining all necessary approvals and permits, as applicable. 3. Re-route existing temporary power supply for north adjacent property parking lot prior to removal of two ComEd poles on north property boundary; 4. Monitoring well abandonment; 5. Roadway and sidewalk removal; 6. Street and other on-site lighting removal; 7. Pedestrian wayfinding and street closure signage and barrier installation; 8. Underground storage tank removal; 9. Excavation sloping/benching/shoring; 10. Maintenance of sewer flow from adjacent property to the north; 11. Soil excavation, blending, staging, and loading; 12. Transportation and disposal of radiation-contaminated soil, special waste, and construction debris; 13. Inspection and radiation screening of transportation containers, as required for transportation and disposal; 14. Characterization, transportation and disposal of existing drums and other storage containers of potentially radiation-contaminated investigation derived waste (IDW) currently stored on site; 15. Excavation dewatering, groundwater management, treatment of contaminated water, storage of contaminated water, storage of treated water, and conveyance of confirmed treated water to Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (MWRD) combined sewer or off-site disposal facility; 16. Stormwater detention basin construction and associated storm sewer connection; 17. Combined sewer replacement along north portion of 26th Street and reconnection of sewer lines on adjacent property to the north; and 18. Backfill excavation with stone, clean soil, grading, and site restoration. 19. Replacement of north adjacent parking lot asphalt, curb and gutter, topsoil and trees in area impacted by remedial action.
