Demolition, site work and new construction of a detention facility in Lexington, North Carolina. Design plans call for the construction of a 576-bed detention facility; for the demolition of a detention facility; and for site work for a detention facility.
The new detention facility project would replace the old, 1950s jail facility and be constructed on the site of the existing Post Office. This construction project would provide critically necessary detention facilities for the County, and provide a net increase of 390 beds even after closing the old (1958) jail. In total, the jail's increase to a 576-bed capacity would allow the County to meet present and long-term detention needs, with possible expansion to 650-beds beyond twenty years. As of March 2026, the project is in redesign and requires Board of Commissioners approval. The revised design is expected to be completed and go before the Board of Commissioners in December 2026. A firm bidding and construction timeline has not been established. The project is included in the Davidson County Fiscal Year 2025-2030 Capital Improvement Plan. *Project information has been obtained through a public capital improvement plan (CIP). A CIP is a financial schedule for short- and long-range projects which is updated regularly.
