Reconstruction of Yonge Street from Florence Avenue/Avondale Avenue to Hendon Avenue/Bishop Avenue. The scope of work includes; a cross-section reduction from six to four lanes; wider sidewalks and boulevards; new and enhanced pedestrian crossing, traffic signals and turn restrictions at some intersections; a centre landscaped median; protected bicycle lanes (cycle tracks); on-street lay-bys for parking, loading and deliveries, where right-of way width permits; the removal of both northbound and southbound left-turn lanes at the intersection of Yonge Street and Sheppard Avenue; modifications in the section of Finch Avenue and Hendon Avenue/Bishop Avenue to improve TTC bus travel. A future Phase 2 Environmental Assessment will look at a redesign of Yonge Street between College/Carlton Street north to Davenport Road, focusing on an enhanced pedestrian environment, much like Yonge TOmorrow. TIMELINE: The City of Toronto Transportation Services has carried out a Municipal Class Environmental Assessment, referred to as REimagining Yonge, that could generate safer, multi-use public spaces in car-centric areas. On December 16, and for the third time, it will go to City Council for approval. The Environmental Assessment Environmental Study Report for the first stage of the REimaginging Yonge Study, from Sheppard Avenue to Finch Avenue was forwarded to City Council March 2022. The Study Focus Area consists of the Yonge Street corridor from south of Sheppard Avenue (Avondale Avenue and Florence Avenue) to north of Finch Avenue (the Finch Hydro Corridor), between Doris Avenue on the east and Beecroft Road on the west. A Request For Proposals for Consultants to complete Detailed design and operations planning is expected late 2023/early 2024 based on available funds. Subject to final completion and approval of the Environmental Assessment Study, the subsequent detailed design assignment, approvals and the allocation of funding, and the implementation of Doris Avenue connection to Tradewind Avenue and the extension of Beecroft Road. Construction for Yonge Street is anticipated to begin in 2026 or later. The contracting method is undetermined.
