Old Potash Highway will be opened from North Road to Claude Road on Friday, July 9, according to the City of Grand Island Public Works Department. Although a portion of the highway will reopen, Old Potash Highway will remain closed between Claude Road to US Highway 281. Grand Island Public Works Department says local businesses within the area will continue to have access maintained from Claude Road, Kaufman Avenue and Diers Avenue. Coming this August, Old Potash Highway is scheduled to be opened from US Highway 281 to Wilmar Avenue, including the Old Potash Highway and Wilmar Avenue roundabout. Also in August, Old Potash Highway will be closed from Wilmar Avenue to Webb Road. The project includes a variety of improvements across roads connecting to, as well as, Old Potash Highway. Improvements on Old Potash Highway include removal of existing asphalt roadway, construction of a concrete curb and construction of a gutter roadway section. Four roundabouts are planned for construction, including intersections at Old Potash Highway and Wilmar Avenue, Old Potash Highway and Cluade Road, Old Potash Highway and North Road and Claude Road and Faidley Avenue. According to the Grand Island Public Works Department, the project also includes storm sewer construction, sidewalk improvements, water main adjustments and sanitary sewer extensions. Starostka Group Unlimited, Inc. of Grand Island was awarded by the City Council the construction contract worth $10,530,764.77. __________ Rehabilitation of Custer Avenue-Forrest Street to Old Potash Highway. This work shall consist of constructing curb and gutter, sidewalks, and driveways of Portland cement concrete on an approved, prepared subgrade Installing complete the casing and carrier pipes. This work shall include, but is not limited to, dewatering, shoring, excavating, tunneling, jacking casing, placing casing with specified support, sealing, compacting, backfilling, and fine grading.
