Site work, renovation and addition to an educational facility in Waterloo, Ontario. Completed plans call for the addition of a 28,080-square-foot, one-story above grade educational facility; for the renovation of a 44,000-square-foot educational facility; and for site work for a educational facility.

University of Waterloo (UW) proposes to renovate and build an addition to the existing Optometry Building. The Waterloo Eye Institute (WEI) will consist of renovations to a total of approximately 4,050 sq m and an addition to a total of approximately 2,600 sq m of space. The areas of work will be located adjacent to occupied educational and laboratory spaces which are required to remain in operation throughout the construction process. The renovation and addition to the facility includes reorganization of the existing clinical program on 2 floor levels. The main space program for the first floor would be primary care, pediatric care, ocular health, rehab, and optical services. On the second floor is planned for new imaging research space, a new bio-medical laboratory and administration areas. The addition will consist of 3 levels. The 3rd level consists of a new Mechanical Penthouse (see Appendix A for Project Information). The project will not be certified under any third-party green building standard but is designed to result in "No net new carbon" emissions for the University. With this approach the new addition does not necessarily have to be net-zero but allows for low-cost, highly effective measures to be implemented in the existing building to lower overall building emissions. TIMELINE: Project has been awarded. Construction is underway.
