West Cemetery Headstone Restoration- The goal of this project is to conserve, restore, and repair 107 headstones in the 1870's section, returning them to sound functioning condition with the least alteration to their historic appearance. The project includes the 107 headstones at West Cemetery that have been prioritized for restoration as well as a report that utilizes both photography and written text to document the original condition, location, treatment, and final condition of each headstone repaired as part of this project. Headstones needing conservation and restoration include large ornate monuments and obelisks, as well as standard headstones. Problems range from tilting, breaking below the base, fracturing, splitting, and toppled through vandalism. The scope of work includes: o Condition assessment o Documentation of current conditions o Conservation o Restoration o Recording of treatments undertaken on the headstones Repairs and conservation must include the following methods: o Fragments of stone should be collected, recorded and properly stored o All gravestones to be conserved must be cleaned o Resetting of tipping, unstable, and fallen grave stones o Adhesive, filling, consolidation and pining repairs as needed or required
