The Watertown Community Foundation is a significant donor to the project with a donation of $500,000 to be paid out for the next 10 years in return for the rights to name the city's downtown park. "We have asked that it be named the Watertown Area Community Foundation Plaza... As time goes forward, it will be known as the Foundation Plaza, much like the Foundation Fields," said the Watertown Area Community Foundation Executive Director Jan DeBerg. Jan DeBerg The city council also approved a park development bid, awarding the project to Gray Construction Co. in the amount of $2,591,667.00. There were three bids submitted for the project, but one of the three was incomplete, so it was not considered. The bid from Gray Construction was the most affordable completed bid. Foundation Plaza will not have an ice rink, but instead is slated to have just over 16,000 square feet of synthetic turf with several areas where pedestrians can find shade. Councilmember Michael Danforth voiced concerns about approving just shy of $2.6 million for the project. The original project without ice was once set to cost $2 million. Even though the council has decided that the cost of the ice is no longer financially viable, the park was still about $600,000 more to be paid for. "We are talking about $2.6 million when we've already thrown the ice out," said Danforth. "How did we get to 2.5 million down to 2 million and back up to 2.6 million and still have no ice" Danforth City Manager Amanda Mack explained that the original estimate for the park with the ice rink was $3.1 million. However, that estimate did not include additional costs to the city, including operations and management, the ice chiller and the Zamboni. "The council at that time decided we were not going to move forward with the ice. Staff took that to mean we still had the $3 million budget," she said.
