Site work for a civil project in Akron, Ohio. Conceptual plans call for site work for a water / sewer project.
The scope of the Project will include the design, engineering, permitting and preparation of bid documents for the restoration of various locations and the removal of three lowhead dams on the Little Cuyahoga River. Restoration is for approximately 1.4 miles of river and includes about four acres of floodplain restoration and 25,000 square feet of slope and bank stabilization. Dam removals are on the Little Cuyahoga near the Kent St crossing and two near 1200 E Market St. Six project areas in the Cuyahoga River AOC have been identified. Conceptual plans have been created for these areas but are still in need of final design and permitting. Area 1 (Lock 18 at RM 1.4) is an oxbow bend with significant erosion issues. To fix this massive erosion issue, the stream pattern needs to be shifted away from the toe of the slope such that the toe of the slope can be stabilized and unaffected by normal base flow. The pattern shift will increase the slope through the area thereby increasing sediment transport competency and lessen further aggradation. This stabilization effort assumes the import of rock toe protection and significant bioengineering to restore the streambank vegetation. Area 2 (Memorial Parkway at RM 0.9) suffers from channelization. The alignment of the stream (thalweg) will be altered to increase the sinuosity, a floodplain created on the old alignment, and the bank stabilized up and downstream of the realignment. Area 3 (CSO Rack 40 RM 0.5) will have approximately 16,700 square feet of floodplain restored just upstream of CSO Rack 40 where other river restoration efforts are being made (under a current construction contract funded by the City of Akron) with more floodplain restoration and slope stabilization. Area 4 (River Street at RM 6.0) has two lowhead dams within 300 feet of each other that will be removed and restored with approximately 11,000 square feet of riffle. Area 5 (Kent St at RM 5.3) has a deteriorated lowhead dam with an opening in the middle allowing the passage of water. It is to be removed and restored with approximately 3,000 square feet of riffle. Area 6 (Floodplain at RM 1.5) is just upstream of Area 1 and is approximately 1.33 acres of restored floodplain. This is just downstream of the outlet for the newly constructed Ohio Canal Interceptor Tunnel.
