Site work and new construction of an educational facility in Burnaby, British Columbia. Completed plans call for the construction of a 14,580-square-foot, two-story above grade educational facility.

Turner Constructions, as SFU's Construction Manager for First Peoples' Gathering House, is inviting interested parties to submit responses for prequalification process. The First Peoples' Gathering House is a 14,000 sf building located at Simon Fraser University on Burnaby Mountain. It is a place for the Indigenous students, faculty and broader community to gather, celebrate, and connect to the land and culture. It includes gathering space, learning and support spaces. The main gathering space is the Great Hall, a ceremonial space for up to 300 people, secondary gathering spaces include the Elder's Room on the main level and a MultiGenerational Lounge at the lower level. Teaching spaces include a Maker Space for learning through doing and a Seminar Room, to support various ways of knowing. Support spaces in the building include a servery kitchen, washrooms, a changeroom/ dressing room, storage, and services room. The site is in a prominent location off the Ceremonial Walk, featuring vistas of the natural and built form. The natural slope to the south allows for the building to integrate with the landscape and provides connection to outdoor gathering space on both the main level on the north side at the ceremonial walkway and at the lower level on the south side of the building. The concept for the building - Walking in Two Worlds - recognizes the Indigenous students' journey as they find a balance between honouring their traditional cultures and finding their place in the western education system. This duality is expressed in the massing and orientation of the building. The Great Hall is oriented on the cardinal directions and represents the indigenous world view, while support spaces are oriented with the existing campus axis, referencing the original Erickson Massey campus plan. The form of the Great Hall is a dynamic interpretation of the Coast Salish longhouse, honouring tradition and alluding to future generations as it reaches skyward. The lower bar inspired by the arbutus tree, traditionally harvested in the area as reflected in the place name Lhukw'lhukw'ayten. The project value listed reflects the total project estimate.
