The Ohio Department of Transportation — via its Office of Jobs and Commerce — is awarding $8.9 million in funding to support 26 projects in 19 Ohio counties, according to Gov. Mike DeWine's office. In Massillon, funds are to help bolster a pavement reconstruction and widening of Warmington Road SW from state Route 21 to the western corporation limit in Massillon. Work is designed to ease semitruck traffic and heavy equipment transport into and out of multiple industrial companies investing in their facilities. City Engineer Alex Pitts said the project cost is $2.75 million, and the work will run approximately 1 mile. ODOT funds are part of other grants being sought for Warmington Road. A sum from the Ohio Public Works Commission is also being sought, Pitts said. In addition, ODOT funds have been dedicated to support intersection improvements on California Avenue at Crock Street NE, Williamsburg Way and state Route 62 in Louisville. A new left turning lane on California Avenue at Reno Drive is part of the effort. California Avenue upgrades are needed for a potential $8 million ice cream production facility and retail store front, according to the state. The manufacturing project is in the early planning stages. Specific funding amounts awarded to Louisville and Massillon were not available in the news release. The road projects are aimed at providing access to developable land, creating easier access to existing businesses and alleviating traffic congestion around commercial areas. "By investing in transportation infrastructure that aligns with local and regional priorities, we're helping to create jobs, strengthen communities and attract private investment," said DeWine via the release. "These funds go directly to projects that position Ohio for success now and well into the future." Road work is slated to start in late 2026 or 2027.
