Update: The purpose of this project is to design and construct a reliable, sustainable, and cost-effective disinfection process relative to the new E.coli WPDES limits effective in 2024. Initial evaluations have determined that current disinfection methods (sodium hypochlorite), may not be a cost-effective or reliable method to meet the new E.coli limit. The design and construction of a new system is anticipated to provide that reliability while reducing the overall cost of treatment. The project scope includes the design and construction of a new disinfection process at Jones Island. For the purposes of this project, it was assumed to be a UV disinfection system for flows up to 150 MGD, and sodium hypochlorite for flows above 150 MGD to be consistent with Alternate 3 from the 2050 FP. The improvements are anticipated to reduce the cost of treatment, therefore reducing operating costs. Project costs increase due to higher construction costs and changes to the project timeline. The project scope includes the design and construction of a new disinfection process at JI. The actual scope will be refined by the preliminary engineering phase of M03113. This is a new project. The project may result in a decrease of chemical costs and an increase in energy costs in the O&M budget. As of May 21, 2024, this project is included in the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District's FY 2024 Capital Budget. It is still in the conceptual stage. Construction is anticipated to begin in July 2026. *Project information has been obtained through a public capital improvement plan (CIP).
