As of May 17, 2024, a site plan has been submitted for review with the City of Grand Rapids. A firm construction timeline has not been established. The City and Grand Rapids Whitewater reserves the right to reject or disregard any Statement of Qualifications, in whole or in part, based on the partner's sole discretion. The Grand River runs through the heart of the City of Grand Rapids, and the project extents start 130 feet upstream of Bridge Street and run to the upstream face of the Fulton Street Bridge. The goals of the project are to do the following: o Reduce public safety hazards generated by low-head dams o Create diverse riffles, runs, waves, pools; restore aquatic riverine habitat and diversity o Improve fish passage o Recapture the sight, sound, and spirit of the historic and iconic rapids, for which the City is named o Enhance distinctive recreational opportunities such as wading, angling, and whitewater paddling sports, that are safe, interesting, and substantial enough to attract tourists and serve as a catalyst for local, regional, and equitable economic development opportunities.
