The Iowa Department of Public Defense is looking to fill a Maintenance Repairer to assist the state. This position will start at base pay The successful candidate will performs skilled maintenance tasks in the repair of structures, fixtures, modular furniture, equipment, and ancillary items pertinent to the building. Maintenance tasks will be performed from the Facility or Department of Public Works (DPW) maintenance program or by management directive. Provide accurate tracking and costing for completed work task. Tasks performed will be from the trade requirements to support the Camp. These trade tasks include, but are not limited to: Perform skilled plumbing duties in the repair, maintenance, and installation of the water distribution system. This work includes but is not limited to: preventive maintenance to plumbing fixtures and installation of water meters, shutoff valves, stop boxes, plastic and copper piping, back flow prevention, showers, bathtubs, faucets, hose bibs, drinking coolers, fire suppression, washing equipment, kitchen equipment, water heaters and a wide range of related tasks. Work to be performed to accepted trade standards and practices, and "Uniform Plumbing Code" where applicable. Assignments will be completed according to established time frames and be perform in a professional, efficient and effective manner. Performs skilled framing and finish carpentry in the remodeling, renovation, and new construction of building and structures. Prepare estimates from available information and inspects work site to determine special or unusual construction considerations. All work shall follow accepted trade practices and standards. Performs other work but is not limited to: installing suspended ceilings, lay floor tile, wall base installation, window glazing, roof gutters, carpentry, sheet rock installation, window repair and glazing, lock and door hardware repairs and replacement, install floor tile, install suspended ceiling grid and tile, plumbing fixture repairs, painting, masonry repairs, and forming-placing-finish of concrete flat work Performs electrical maintenance tasks in the repair of building electrical items as but not limited to: changing out of various type light fixtures to include bulbs and ballasts, replacing light switches, replacing power outlets, repairing emergency signage, repairing kitchen appliances, and other small electrical repair and maintenance items. Follows directions and training procedures as taught by electricians. Will assist in larger projects under the guidance of electricians, work as but not limited to: bend conduit, set conduit, pull wire, set electrical device boxes, install fixtures, and other tasks that assist the electricians. Use the hand and power tools normally associated with electrical work. All work will follow accepted trade standards. Completed work will be documented and tracked for proper cost accounting. Perform repairs to window screens, storm window repair, drywall installation, and a wide variety of other tasks. Prepare and paint wood, metal, concrete, drywall and all other surfaces normally associated with a paint finish. Perform work at journeyman level. Prepare surface by best method to receive and hold paint for long-term serviceability. Paint failure not contributed to poor surface preparation technique. Repair and fill holes, cracks, seams, joints, and etc. to preserve surface appearance and prevent weather infiltration. Apply paint by sprayer, brush, roller or other means best suited to application technique. Perform concrete flatwork, including the tasks of: establishing grade, building forms, adding and compacting fill, placing concrete, screed, bull float, float and trowel finish, cutting expansion grooves, pulling forms, cleanup, and back place dirt against concrete. Concrete work includes, but is not limited to: sidewalks, driveways, slabs, stoops, steps, curbs, manholes, footings, drainage systems, and street repair. Use such power equipment as: soil packer, concrete saw, and skid loader with attachments, vibrator/consolidator, and power screed. Work will be performed in such a manner that finished concrete meets required specifications in strength and appearance. Obtain required operator's certification and driver's license to operate equipment and trucks as required by management. Perform all additional work assigned, to include but not limited to: (A) Operate various mowers to cut grass and weeds, so that the appearance and efficiency of the camp is maintained. Inspect condition of soil, terrain, vegetation, and choose the mower and mowing technique best suited for the task. Finished product will be neat in appearance, free of debris and trimmed out. Mowers operated to keep sidewalks, streets, and parked cars free of blown grass and other debris. Mowers will be serviced before and after operating. Perform checks at opportune times during operations to ensure proper operating levels. No breakdowns or damage to equipment due to negligence. (B) Operate grounds maintenance equipment such as, but not limited to: chainsaws, stump cutter, brush chipper, seeders, tractors, tree spade truck, and skid loaders with attachments. Operate equipment in a safe and reliable manner. Perform a wide variety of cantonment maintenance projects as well as training area enhancement projects. (C) Perform snow removal tasks using snowplow trucks, and other equipment to remove snow. Clear streets, parking lots, sidewalks, and etc. according to established procedures, priorities and other instructions pertinent at the time. Hours-7:00 AM-3:30 PM Monday-Friday, after hours/weekends as required Minimum Qualification Requirements Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification: Three years of full-time work experience in two or more of the recognized building and mechanical trades (carpentry, electrical, heating and air conditioning, machinist, machine repair, masonry, painting, pipefitting, plumbing, refrigeration, and welding). Three years of a combination of experience (as described in number one) and education, where thirty semester hours of post high school education in an accredited building or mechanical vocational program equals one year of experience. Current and continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes two years of full-time work as a Trades Helper.
