Saving Project...

Renovation of a library in Washington, District of Columbia. Completed plans call for the renovation of a library.

The Library of Congress (LOC) John Adams Building (JAB) is a five-story art-deco style library/office building located at Second Street and Independence Ave., SE, Washington, DC. The building has an attic, two occupied levels below grade including a perimeter garage, and a cellar. The building opened to the public in 1939 and has over 968,000 gross square feet of library, office, storage, electric, and mechanical rooms. The building is considered business use. The work includes a Base (Phase 1) with one (1) Option (Phase 2). The project involves construction of new roofing, fall protection and lightning protection systems and new roof hatches. The work is separated into two phases whereas, the work for Phase 1 will be executed first and the work for Phase 2 will follow upon completion of Phase 1 and pending funding availability for Phase 2. It is anticipated the award of Option 1 (Phase 2) will be exercised in FY23. The work in both Phase 1 and Phase 2 is very similar, as the work is located on three separate roof levels (Phase 1 = low roof and Phase 2 = mid and high roofs). Phase 2 includes the roof hatch work. The existing roof area features two types of copper roofing, flat seam and batten seam. The new work will feature two types of roofing, liquid applied reinforced membrane and copper batten seam. The work includes the removal of existing copper roofing and flashings and the removal of fall protection and lightning protection systems. Hazardous material abatement relative to the demolition activity is also part of the work. A new fall protection system will be installed. The roof surface will be prepared for new roofing which will require some of the existing underlayment to be removed down to deck. Concrete patching and repair will have to be performed at the new fall protection anchors and areas of deck that do not meet the criteria for the new liquid applied roofing. Wood battens will be installed on top of the existing wood batten to increase the overall batten height. Some existing copper hoods and curbs are to be repaired. Some new copper hoods will be provided. The new liquid applied membrane roofing system and batten seam copper roofing system will be installed with associated copper flashings and sealants. A new lightning protection system is a part of the work.
