Renovation of a mixed-use development in Calgary, Alberta. Completed plans call for the renovation of a 560,000-square-foot clubhouse / community center.
The design for the ACT 2 Project will be guided by the following objectives established by CMLC, Arts Commons, and The City of Calgary: 1. Modernize the building to deliver a world-class performing arts centre that elevates arts and culture and contributes to the resiliency of downtown Calgary. 2. Contribute to the revitalization of adjacent public spaces by creating active edges along all sides of the Arts Commons campus, including the newly transformed Olympic Plaza. 3. The presence of visual and performing arts will permeate the interior and exterior public spaces allowing programs and performances to be delivered in unexpected places. 4. Create a connected arts campus with a common visual identity and patron experience regardless of the venue. 5. Transform public spaces within the building to be welcoming, flexible, and adaptable to support the creation and presentation of a wide range of the performing arts. 6. Prioritize efficient construction and project management to expedite timelines, minimizing impacts on Arts Commons and resident companies. 7. A design that unites the Arts Commons campus, including Olympic Plaza, as a crucial contributor to the vibrancy of Calgary’s downtown. 8. Realizing an inclusive building that offers improved accessibility, amenities, technology, and an enhanced visitor experience for all. 9. Embodying Arts Commons’ dedication to creating a welcoming destination for communities that have been historically excluded from the downtown arts scene and a commitment to breaking down barriers to cultural participation. Project Scope ACT 2 involves selective renovations and additions to the existing Arts Commons building as a means of renewing the facility and realigning its operations with its current mandate and mission. Inaugurated in 1985, the facility will be over 40 years old by the time the renovation begins and while it has been carefully maintained, the public spaces need to be reconfigured to improve audience amenities and access, create a greater sense of coherence to the complex, and provide a sense of invitation and welcome to patrons and the broader community. To maximize the efficiency of the renovation project and reduce risk, the building will closed during construction. The decanting of the resident companies comes at a cost to Arts Commons and as a result, minimizing the duration of the building closure is critical to project success. Each of the resident companies and their audiences will be significantly impacted by the building closure and due to the nature of the performing arts, planning for a season typically begins two years in advance so schedule management of the construction phase is key contributor to project success. Owner requires that all interested parties sign a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) in order to access the plans and specs for this project. To obtain the NDA for this project refer to document details in this report.
