As of May 4, 2023, project is waiting for final approval from the Federal High Administration. A firm timeline for construction has not been established; however, construction is expected to begin in 2024. The closed solicitation has been included below for reference. The Kensington Redevelopment Project has been awarded a $55 million grant for a 6-lane, 4,600-foot-long tunnel extending from under Street to Sydney Street and a redesign of Humboldt Parkway. The redesign of Humboldt Parkway would not only be for cars but for pedestrians and bicyclists with traffic-calming measures, crosswalks, bicycle lanes and signs. It would also include a tree-lined walkable linear park in the median with Victoria gardens, sidewalks and benches. This would connect with the adjacent Martin Luther King Jr. Park. Restoring the Majestic Humboldt Parkway in the City of Buffalo (Western New York Region) - The new transportation capital plan includes up to $1 billion to reconnect the east-west neighborhoods across the depressed section of the Kensington Expressway corridor and re-establish the green space originally provided by Humboldt Parkway without compromising the long-term capacity of the important regional transportation link provided by the expressway. The existing Expressway is critical to the region and has both operational and structural deficiencies that require significant investment to address. This project will promote a community-based approach to restoring the historical and cultural significance of this corridor severed by construction in 1958.
