The Struvite Control System reduces buildup of struvite, also known as magnesium ammonium phosphate, a mineralization formed during the anerobic digestion process. Struvite is currently causing process challenges where it precipitates inside of pipes, pumps, and heat exchangers. This buildup reduces flowrates and heat transfer efficiencies, and also causes excessive wear of pumps and seals. This project provides equipment for the controlled dosing of iron salts to the digesters. The iron salts bind with phosphorus, reducing the precipitation of struvite in or on digestion equipment. Project cost is estimated at $1,000,000 (2021 dollars). This project is in included in the City of Dubuque FY 2023-2028 Capital Improvement Plan (CIP).
